Montgomery County, PA

Montgomery County was created on September of 1784. It's land originated from a from part of Philadelphia County. The county is believed to be named after Montgomeryshire in Wales, for the Revolutionary hero Gen. Richard Montgomery, or possibly for two legislators named Montgomery who put through the bill to start the county.

The first settlers of the land were German immigrants who arrived there in 1685. Later, more nationalities followed such as: English (primarily Quakers), Scotch-Irish, Swedes, and Welsh. When Schuykill Canal opened in 1825, it boosted the county's economy. There was a significant increase in upper class homes in the 1860's when the Pennsylvania Railroad's Main Line was assembled through the county. Montgomery County has some of the best soil for practicing intelligent farming.
